National Goat Handbook

American Boer Goat Association

Boer (or 'Farmer') Goats originated in South Africa, bred largely as meat goats. They are generally characterized by white bodies and reddish heads. The Boers raised at Whitten Farms are from ABGA Registered and Certified Ennobled breeding stock.

As a breed, Boers pass their genetic traits on well when crossed with other breeds, resulting in what is referred to as a 'Percentage' animal.

Myotonic, or 'Fainting Goats' as they are more commonly known, have an inherited neuro-muscular disposition which causes the goats to stiffen or even fall over when startled. Though the exact origins of this breed are somewhat of a mystery, it is believed by many that these goats originated in Tennessee.  Whitten Farms produces excellent examples of this unique and rare breed.

Like Boer Goats, improvements to the Fainting Goat can be made through selective breeding and culling for desired traits, such as overall size. In fact, Boers and Fainters are widely recognized as ideal compliments for cross-breeding.
